Venue Details 

The Class of 2023 Joplin Commencement will be held at Missouri Southern State University - Leggett and Platt Athletic Center  at 3950 E. Newman Road in Joplin, MO 64801. Leggett & Platt Athletic Center is an indoor sports venue located on the campus of Missouri South State University with a capacity of 4,000. Free parking is located in parking lots around the athletic center. Limited handicapped parking is available.

Guest Hooder Requirements

All graduate candidates who are eligible for a Guest Hooder and would like to request one must complete the Guest Hooder Request Form.

The Guest Hooder Request Form can be found in in the 2023 Grad Guide provided in your student email.

  • This form must be submitted no later than Wednesday, December 21, 2022. We cannot make exceptions to any deadlines.
  • Completion of this form DOES NOT guarantee approval of your Guest Hooder.
  • Students will be notified of approval or denial of their Guest Hooder request no later than Friday, January 13, 2023. Notifications will be sent to the e-mail provided on the request form.

COM GRADUATES - GUEST HOODER REQUIREMENTS

COM Guest Hooders must meet one of the following criteria. All requests must be submitted by filling out the Guest Hooder Request Form.

  • An immediate family member that is a DO, MD, MBBS or MBBCH (medical degree granted in some countries)
    • For this purpose an immediate family member is defined as a: grandparent, parent, mother/father inlaw, significant other or sibling.
  • A current KCU faculty member, preceptor or adjunct faculty member

COM graduate candidates who do not request a Guest Hooder will be hooded by a COM faculty member.

BIOMED (2-YEAR TRACK) GRADUATES - GUEST HOODER REQUIREMENTS

Biomed 2-Year Track graduate candidates may request for their research track mentor to be their Guest Hooder by filling out the Guest Hooder Request Form.

Biomed 2-Year Track graduate candidates who do not request a Guest Hooder will be hooded by a COB faculty member.

PSYD GRADUATES - GUEST HOODER REQUIREMENTS

PsyD graduate candidates will be hooded by their dissertation chair. However, if you have an immediate family member that has a doctoral degree, you may request them as a second Guest Hooder by filling out the Guest Hooder Request Form.

  • For this purpose an immediate family member is defined as a: grandparent, parent, mother/father inlaw, significant other or sibling.

BIOMED (1-YEAR TRACK) GRADUATES - FACULTY HOODER DETAILS

Biomed 1-Year Track graduates are NOT eligible for Guest Hooders and will be hooded by a COB faculty member.

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs)

Will the ceremony be held in person?

Yes. At this time, we are planning to hold the 2023 Commencement Ceremonies in person at MSSU Leggett and Platt Athletic Center in Joplin and at the Independence Auditorium in Kansas City.

Will there be a virtual option to view the ceremony?

Yes. The entire ceremony will be available to view via livestream and recorded for viewing post-ceremony.

What time will the ceremonies be held?

The ceremonies will take place in the morning. The tentative start time is 10 a.m. for both Joplin and Kansas City. Please note that ceremony start times are subject to change.

How many guests can I invite?

At this time, unlimited guests will be allowed at both venues. Closer to Commencement, you will be asked to fill out an RSVP form to let us know how many people you are planning to have in your party. In the event that the overall request for tickets is higher than the venue’s capacity approved by the Fire Department, KCU does reserve the right to limit tickets.

Is attendance at graduation required?

All graduates are required to be present for an in-person commencement ceremony. If you need to request an excused absence, please review the Request an Excused Absence section.

When do I need to arrive on campus for senior week?

The senior week activity schedule has not yet been determined. More information will be provided in late January.

How do I get my attire?

KCU orders your Commencement attire for you. It’s important you complete the Commencement registration form so we can collect your height and weight to ensure you receive the correct size. You will pick up your attire the week of Commencement on your respective campus.
