Kansas City University (KCU) announced on March 25, 2022, the establishment of the J. Mike Stanton, DO, FAOCA Endowed Professorship in Medical Simulation, the first endowed professorship in the history of the University.
This new position is made possible by a generous gift of $500,000 from KCU alumni J. Mike Stanton, DO, in honor of the education he received in at KCU. The gift has been matched with an equal amount to establish the $1 million endowed clinical professorship.
Stanton graduated from KCU’s College of Osteopathic Medicine in 1977 and credits the university for much of his success as an osteopathic physician and anesthesiologist.
“As as a graduate of the KCU College of Osteopathic Medicine, I have fond memories of my experience at KCU, and I am so proud of my alma mater. I am also keenly aware of how that experience and the excellent education I received made possible my successful career as an osteopathic physician and anesthesiologist.”
Medical simulation allows health sciences students to develop clinical skills through deliberate and repeated practice. During their first two years of medical school, KCU osteopathic medical students have access to simulated patients and mannikins on which to practice physical exams and health-care scenarios prior to entering clinical rotations in their third and fourth years.
Stanton announced his gift at a ceremony held at KCU’s new Center for Medical Education Innovation (CMEI), where first- and second-year students receive valuable experience using cutting edge technology, human simulators, augmented and virtual reality, plus the practice of osteopathic manipulative medicine (OMM). Stanton is also a donor to the CMEI.
“I recall starting my residency and being told to “see one, do one, teach one’” Stanton said. “In today’s world of medical simulation, our medical graduates will enter their first graduate medical training with hands on practice performed again and again in KCU’s Center for Medical Education Innovation.”
