Thomas M. Sack, PhD
Tom Sack, PhD, retired from a 40-year career at MRIGlobal in 2022 where he served as president and CEO from 2012 through 2022, leading MRIGlobal’s $115M diverse research portfolio covering projects in health, national security, defense and energy. In 2019, Sack and his team successfully managed a $15M capital campaign to expand MRIGlobal’s Kansas City presence in life sciences, despite the challenges of the pandemic. That expansion enabled MRIGlobal to provide critical research addressing the development of COVID diagnostics, vaccines and test protocols, and to configure mobile diagnostic facilities for underserved communities. In 2016, he reinvigorated MRIGlobal’s government relations program, which resulted in significant growth in U.S. government funding and over $3M in government-directed spending.
Currently, Sack serves as a senior consultant for Byrne Pelofsky and Associates, helping nonprofit organizations grow and prosper through creative fundraising.
His role in executive leadership, combined with decades of experience securing government and commercial projects to address national and global challenges, provides a unique skill set. His expertise includes scientific research and development management, proposal writing, corporate governance, government relations, program management and strategy.
As an advocate for science and education, Sack serves on the Board of Directors of Kansas City’s Union Station, and BioNexus KC. He previously served on the executive advisory committee for FIRST Robotics, Kansas City Region, the Rockhurst University Board of Trustees, and the Alliance for Sustainable Energy, which manages the National Renewable Energy Laboratory.
Sack received a Bachelor of Science in Chemistry from Rockhurst College, and a PhD in Analytical Chemistry from University of Nebraska-Lincoln. He is a member of the American Chemical Society and has coauthored more than fifty publications and technical papers.
