Keralty Hospital Miami, FL

Core Site assignments are for year three only. Clerkship placement during year four is based solely on the site’s availability and approval. Students must follow the scheduling protocols outlined by the location and the Clinical Education Guidelines.

Keralty Hospital is an academic, community hospital located in suburban Miami, Florida. The hospital was founded as the first osteopathic teaching hospital in Florida in 1967, having trained thousands of resident and student-physicians since its opening as Westchester General Hospital. Since 2018, the hospital has been an ACGME accredited institution, training both osteopathic and allopathic learners. As an academic community hospital, Keralty Hospital's approach to patient care combines the smaller hospital experience with a focus on research, scholarship, and evidence-based medicine. In addition to the hospital, the Keralty Hospital medical education program has a robust clinical affiliate network throughout South Florida where students train and engage in patient care.

Resources & Benefits

  • Facility Resources: Students have access to: Computers, Medical Library, Internet, Medical Records, Lounge, Printer, Phone
  • Meal Benefits: Access to the cafeteria
  • Visiting Student Housing: Most outpatient activities are within a 5-20 minute driving radius of the hospital, so the hospital's address should be used for geographic proximity. Student personal transportation is strongly encouraged. The hospital is within relatively close proximity to both the University of Miami and Florida International University, so student friendly housing exists within the community. As a suburban site, students readily find annual rentals, VRBO/AirBnB, and extended-stay lodging opportunities. Housing costs in South Florida are well above national averages, so students should expect added housing expenses.

Duties & Opportunities

  • Student Duties: Students are required to participate in daily patient rounds and weekend rounds as assigned
  • Didactic Opportunities: Students are required to participate in didactics
  • OMT/OPP Opportunities: Students may participate in OMT/OPP skills development during some clerkships

Unique Site Characteristics

  • Background check and drug screen required annually
  • BLS and ACLS certifications must be current
  • Copy of Curriculum Vitae (CV) required
  • Global Track and Military Track students must communicate third-year clerkship obligations to site as soon as the Clerkship Match Process is finalized
  • Orientation is provided prior to the first clerkship
  • TB screening required annually (only two-step skin test or blood test accepted)
  • South Florida is considered the capital of Latin America, and Spanish is widely spoken. The hospital is located in an area rich in Cuban, Venezuelan, and Colombian ex-patriots, so knowledge of Spanish is very helpful, though not required. Miami is well known for its beaches, culture, food, museums, and nightlife--but none are as celebrated as the "cafecito." Students training at Keralty Hospital should be prepared to enjoy the little shot of espresso coffee that keeps the city--no less the hospital--running.
