Shireen A. Hafez, DVM, PhD

Associate Professor of Foundational Sciences

Dr. Hafez studied angiogenesis in the female reproductive organs during her PhD and continued to conduct research in the field of angiogenesis for several years after graduation along with conducting other anatomical studies. She is the author of a book chapter about the placenta, co-author of a book chapter about methods for evaluating placental angiogenesis, and the author of a book entitled “Angiogenesis in Caprine Reproductive Organs”, published by VDM Verlag Dr. Müller. She published several other articles in internationally recognized journals such as the Anatomical Record (one of the images from it was used as a cover illustration). Another image from one of her papers served as a cover illustration in the Journal of Anatomy, and a third appeared on the cover of the Journal of Veterinary Anatomy.

Dr. Hafez has a deep interest in student learning and has shifted her research focus to educational approaches, hoping to improve the process of student learning. She presented some of her work at conferences and invited presentations, and has published in this area. She obtained a postgraduate certificate and a diploma in education offered by the University of London, which were completed in 2019 and 2020, respectively. She is particularly interested in emotional intelligence and its relationship to learning as well as curriculum design and outcome assessment. Her interest in assessment led her to develop an innovative anatomy assessment modality that was published in the Anatomical Sciences Education. She received the Excellence in Scholarship Award from Texas Tech University, an award given to one faculty member who has demonstrated excellence in scholarship beyond expectations. She is also under contract with Wiley Publishing and is in the process of writing an anatomy textbook.
