KCU-Kansas City Osteopathic Medicine Orientation
Mon., July 13 – Thurs., July 23
July 6, 2020
Dear KCU-COM Kansas City Class of 2024,
Your orientation to KCU is almost here! You are encouraged to review the full schedule of activities planned for July 13 – 22. Live videoconference links and asynchronous content will be available in two Canvas courses: Med School 101 and COM 2024 Orientation. If you are not able to access these courses, please email email@example.com immediately.
Supplies and Attire
Please ensure that you have access to a reliable internet connection, a laptop or other device with a web camera and microphone throughout Orientation and Med School 101. You may wish to have a notebook and pen nearby or digital document open for note-taking. On Friday, July 17, certain household supplies will be required for your OMM lab activity.
Business casual attire is recommended for online orientation activities. That said, we recognize that web-based meetings typically fall more on the casual side of that recommendation. We encourage you to be comfortable while maintaining a polished and professional appearance in live video conferences.
What to Expect on Monday, July 13
First, please plan to pick up your Welcome Box at your assigned time. Please be sure to arrive promptly at the beginning of your assigned window of time. Remember to place a sign with your last name and first initial in the passenger side of your windshield. We do not expect that you will need to leave your vehicle during this pick-up process.
After you receive your Welcome Box, please follow instructions from KCU’s Safety & Emergency Management and Score 1 for Health teams to receive your COVID-19 test. Additional advance instructions regarding COVID-19 testing will be released via email.
Faculty Advising Meeting
As a medical student at KCU, you are assigned to an advising team of two faculty members. Your faculty advising team is available to support you as you adapt to medical school academically and socially, develop career goals, and explore the resources available to you. Your advising team assignment will be sent to you via email.
You are expected to meet via videoconference with your faculty advisors and fellow advisees. You will receive a link in your email to your advising team’s meeting, which will take place at 3:00 p.m. CDT Monday, July 13. As indicated on the Orientation schedule, you should plan to watch the videos in the Faculty Advising module in Canvas prior to your meeting.
If you have previously been excused from Orientation activities on this date, your advisors will be notified, and you will be provided with information about how to connect with them.
Learning And Study Skills Inventory (LASSI)
KCU asks all incoming students to complete the Learning and Study Skills Inventory (LASSI). The inventory helps identify the ways in which you learn best. You will debrief the results as part of Med School 101 programming. Please complete the inventory before 11:59 p.m. Tuesday, July 14. Enter our school number and the login information listed on the LASSI instruction sheet. (The login information is the same for all students on the Kansas City campus.) Please read the instructions for additional information about the LASSI and how to complete it. When you have completed the LASSI, you will receive a summary of results in your web browser. Please save this summary as a PDF. You will be asked to upload it to Canvas and use it in your Med School 101 debrief activity.
If you have any questions, please contact firstname.lastname@example.org. We look forward to your participation next week.

Dear KCU-COM Kansas City Class of 2024,
Greetings! You recently received a communication from the Executive Dean at Kansas City University for the College of Osteopathic Medicine and Vice President for Health Affairs, Dr. Darrin D’Agostino, providing guidance for your transition to Kansas City.
Just as KCU is adhering to academic year start dates, the University remains committed to offering you a comprehensive orientation experience beginning July 13.
It is essential for all OMS1 students to be in place in your campus community by July 13 so you can get settled into housing, self-isolate for 14 days, and be ready to go as soon as campus activities resume. Orientation will occur beginning the July 13. Mandatory, small-group in-person activities will most likely begin as early as July 27.
Orientation and Medical School 101 will commence on Monday, July 13 continuing through July 22. While local guidelines and protocols will not make it possible for us to all gather together in-person, we have carefully designed programming that will be delivered virtually and that will prepare you for a successful experience in medical school, help acclimate you to the KCU family and your new community, and introduce you to new classmates, faculty and staff who will serve as your support system in the years ahead. Additionally, Medical School 101 will provide invaluable exposure to pre-curricular learning and an opportunity to examine your learning style and develop strategies for academic success.
Participation in Orientation and Medical School 101 is required. A more detailed schedule will be available in the coming weeks.
White Coating Ceremony Update
The significance and importance of the White Coating Ceremony is a treasured tradition at KCU. The University is committed to maintaining the symbolic and sentimental nature of the event rather than conducting it virtually as some schools may choose to do. Therefore, KCU will delay the White Coating Ceremony until such time that we can gather in a single venue to celebrate this significant milestone in your journey toward becoming a physician.
We are beyond excited to welcome you to the KCU family and look forward to connecting July 13 through July 22 for Orientation and Medical School 101. Should you have any questions, please contact the Office of Student Affairs at 816-654-7225 or firstname.lastname@example.org.
