Joel Feder, DO (COM '75)
Dr. Joel Feder, a 1975 graduate from the Kansas City University of Medicine and Biosciences (KCU), started his naval career in 1970. Thanks in part to a suggestion from family member, Dr. Feder then made the decision to become a DO. As Dr. Feder explains, “At the time, most family doctors were DO’s and that is what I wanted to be. I wanted to treat the whole patient, not just a particular disease.”
Since graduating from KCU, Dr. Feder has maintained active involvement at the University, specifically within the Alumni Association where he serves as president. He also partakes in several additional KCU committees, as well as serves as the Alumni Association’s representative on the Board of Trustees.
Through his involvement with the Alumni Association, Dr. Feder believes his biggest charge is the development of KCU’s students. The association is constantly looking for new ways to mentor and help students grow into well-rounded osteopathic physicians. Drawing upon his naval experience, Dr. Feder hopes to pass along two values that he found to be important: discipline and teamwork.
“In the Navy, you depend on those around you to help protect you and, in healthcare, it’s much the same. Our patients are depending on us to protect them from disease and to keep them healthy.”
Dr. Feder currently practices as a primary care provider at the Leavenworth VA Medical Center.
