Larry Anderson, DO (COM '78)
It doesn’t take much to understand why Larry Anderson, DO, a 1978 graduate from the Kansas City University of Medicine and Biosciences (KCU), chose to enter the field of medicine. As a fifth generation physician, Dr. Anderson always felt a strong desire to enter the field. However, while the rest of his family chose the path of an MD, Dr. Anderson made the decision to pursue a degree in osteopathic medicine.
“When I was in college I picked up a magazine that talked about the ‘other doctor.’ I felt a connection to the mindset of osteopathic doctors, specifically the ideology of keeping the patients’ needs in the forefront of my thinking and how to take care of them.” This feeling, combined with the fact that the majority of doctors he dealt with in Atlanta were DO’s trained at KCU, spurred Dr. Anderson to pursue his education here. Once he arrived at KCU, Dr. Anderson found he was drawn to classes that allowed a real connection between what was learned in the course and how it was applied to a real person.
Assuming the presidency of the American College of Osteopathic Family Physicians (ACOFP) this month, Dr. Anderson is tasked with leading the organization through a period of terrific change. He works with the student chapter of the ACOFP to encourage family medicine as a specialty of choice, as well as providing financial support for guest lecturers and opportunities to participate in the national convention.
“Any time you can contribute back to the profession it is always worthwhile. Everything we do is focused on providing better care for our patients and better training for our physicians,” says Dr. Anderson.
Dr. Anderson currently practices in family medicine with Anderson Family Medicine located in Dawsonville, Georgia.
