United States Senator Roy Blunt visited Kansas City University of Medicine and Biosciences (KCU), meeting with physician and science faculty along with medical students on the front lines of education and treatment in the opioid epidemic gripping the region and the country.

Leaders from the Kansas City University of Medicine and Biosciences (KCU) joined partners and friends from the Joplin community to break ground on its second College of Osteopathic Medicine in Joplin, Missouri. The groundbreaking took place during a ceremony at Mercy Hospital Joplin’s former location, which was donated to serve as the campus of the new medical school.

Science took center stage in Kansas City this week as Nobel Laureate Dr. Randy Schekman arrived to celebrate the 100-year history of Kansas City University of Medicine and Biosciences (KCU) and nurture medical students who will carry on the tradition into the future.

KCU's Schoen W. Kruse, PhD, and John Graneto, DO, were inducted into the 2016 National Academy of Osteopathic Medical Educators (NAOME) Fellows by the American Association of Colleges of Osteopathic Medicine. Dr. Kruse is assistant dean for academic affairs at KCU; Dr. Graneto is an associate dean.

Paula M. Gregory, DO, will join the university as dean of its new college of osteopathic medicine in Joplin, Mo., effective June 1, 2016. The campus will enroll its first class of 150 students in the fall of 2017.

The Kansas City University of Medicine and Biosciences (KCU) is closing in on $40 million in donations toward the planned development of a second College of Osteopathic Medicine in Joplin, Missouri. The Joplin Regional Medical School Alliance (JRMSA), a not-for-profit foundation formed through an alliance of medical and community leaders, has raised $29.6 million toward its $30 million pledge to KCU for the project.

KCU hosted a ribbon-cutting ceremony for its newly renovated Administration Building on Jan. 12. The ribbon-cutting ceremony served as the kickoff event for KCU’s 2016 Centennial celebration.

The Kansas City University of Medicine and Biosciences (KCU) is pleased to announce that Anne VanGarsse, MD, assistant dean of clinical affairs and assistant professor of pediatrics, has been appointed the new chief medical officer of Health Partnership Clinic (HPC) of Johnson County.

Jingsong Zhou, Ph.D., research investigator and professor of physiology at the Kansas City University of Medicine and Biosciences College of Osteopathic Medicine (KCU-COM), received a $165,000 grant from the Victor E. Speas Foundation to support continued study of Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis (ALS). Specifically, the grant will support additional work addressing muscle-bone crosstalk in the disease.

Three KCU-COM faculty received honors from the American College of Osteopathic Internists as Masters and Fellow.
